Office update says there are no more updates to install. I have v. 11.4.0 now, having updated to this version a few days ago. Now I keep getting authentication failed on receiving mail messages every few minutes: 12:16 12:19 12:46 12:59 1:13 etc. I can send myself emails, though I don't know if I'm missing from some senders (some are coming in). Verizon couldn't help me. Ideas?

Office update says there are no more updates to install. I have v. 11.4.0 now,
having updated to this version a few days ago.

The latest update for Office 2004 is 11.5.2

Download the combo updater 11.5.0 then update to 11.5.1 and 11.5.2.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/mactopia_dl.html>

Download this script that will show you Office version info. Note there are
different scripts for Office X, 2004 and Office 2008. It gives the version
number for each Office application, the component plugin and your OS
version. Even if ALL the Office applications aren't updated each time, the
Microsoft Component Plugin, which isn't an app, will always show the latest
update.

Diane, it is true that the latest version of Office 2004 is 11.5.2, but the
11.5 updates apparently did not touch Entourage, which still shows version
11.4.0.

I updated MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.5 and then tried to install 11.5.0 but it says I don't have the proper software installed. Is there something between 11.4.0 and 11.5.0?

Ed, can you send me the clipboard for Office 2004 version info using the
script?

Thanks!

This sounds like the problem Office 2008 users are experiencing, but it's
because of the package installer used in Office 2008. Office 2004 still uses
the Vise installer.

Did you restart?
Did you manually download or did you let the AutoUpdater download? It's
possible you got the wrong updater.

I do have the older updater links posted here, I would try the 11.3.5 combo
and see what happens. (This one contains the most important updates.)

I am having this same problem. I had tried restarting and even deleting my Entourage account and making a new account. Still have the problem. I have v 11.4.0 and tried to download 11.3.5 as suggested. The file on my desktop shows up as p6UxAvGv.exe.part and it asks me to choose an application to open it. What should I choose?

Wrong file type for a Mac.

If you have the 11.4.0 installed, you do not need to go back to 11.3.5.

I, too, tried to install 11.3.5 but it didn't open with Vise and couldn't find what it needed.

I manually downloaded the 10.5.5 combo updater, same for 11.50/11.51/11.52. These and the above open in a window that says Office 2004 11.3.5 update. I've restarted numerous times since then.

If I wasn't afraid to lose all of my emails, I'm tempted to reinstall and never update again! I'm not sure I have a choice though.

Office 2004 11.5.2 Update
Type of Install: Easy Install
It seems that I do have 11.5.2 installed! I just found Update logs. These would have been done with the auto-update. I believe this is when the error messages began.

Installed EARTH:Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Microsoft Excel
Installed EARTH:Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Microsoft Office
Installed EARTH:Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Microsoft Component Plugin
Installed EARTH:Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Microsoft Graph

The installation is complete.

The Microsoft Component Plugin is always updated even though individual
Office applications might have different versions.

Did you download the script I mentioned above?

I believe this is when the error
messages began.

To be clear.... The error message: authentication failed on receiving mail
messages every few minutes.

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.

Run Keychain Access found in /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.

You might need to delete the account in both Entourage and the Keychain to
clear the problem.

I did not do any updates but started getting numerous 17900 error messages. Verizon says it is an Entourage issue. I've read the previous posts and I'm lost about the upgrades (are those Microsoft or Mac OS?). I'm using Entourage 12.1.2 and OS 10.4.11. I think I am eventually getting all my mail but not sure.

Under Help in the Menu bar of any Office application, select "Check for
Updates". This will download the updates you need. It does not automatically
install them for you. I suggest setting this to automatically so you will be
notified when a new update comes out. In your situation, you need these
updates:

12.1.3 and 12.1.4.

When I tried to run the script you mentioned I get an error message: Database Daemon not present...error type -10814. I deleted the keychain, but haven't deleted the account yet. I seem to be receiving mail, but still get the yellow hazard triangle/authorization failed. I'm going to run some anti-virus software to see if there's a bug.

I tried again and was able to run it. Looks like I have 11.4 Entourage.

A virus would not cause a connection problem.

Try this:

1) Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

2) Open Entourage and enter the account. Set to "Leave on server" under the
options tab.

3) Test the account.

If this fails, then there is a problem with your account settings. FWIW,
Verizon users have all complained about poor service with Verizon.

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

Check your Keychain for corruption.

Options under Advances for both POP and SMTP might need to be checked.
Verizon should be able to help you with the settings required regardless of
which application you use.

I'm not sure what finally solved the problem, but I think it had something to do with running Norton Anti-Virus software and then subsequent problems that resulted in resetting various system settings with Disk Utilities. No more error messages! Thanks for all the help, though.

Norton Antivirus is not only unnecessary (because there have been ZERO
viruses in the wild for Mac OS X for the past eight years), but it's
also known to cause major problems with system stability, because it's
shoddy software.

JR, I agree with you about NAV being shoddy, but your first point is subject
to interpretation. There ARE macro viruses that attack either Office on both
OS X or Windows, and they can spread to other users of Office on either
platform.

Therefore, I consider it worthwhile for users of versions of Office prior to
2004 (and, hopefully after version 2008) to have antivirus software on their
Macs. (Since Office 2008 does not support VBA, it has no need for virus
protection -- and little value to me!) Personally, I use Intego
VirusBarrier:

Using virus software on the Mac pretty much only help users not pass on
virus to PC users. See this article:

Given that I exchange a lot of e-mail with Windows users, I find that a good
enough reason to use an anti-virus program. Contrary to the link you posted,
I find that Intego VirusBarrier uses a negligible amount of CPU and RAM.
YMMV.
