Error 1911 when I try to open Word 2003

My Office 2003 installation used to work fine. Today, when I tried to start
Word, it went into the office setup process and terminated with "Error 1911.
Setup cannot register type library for file C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Portal\Connect.dll. Contact Microsoft Product Support
Services (PSS) fro assistance". Of course, to contact PSS I need my program
ID, which I can't get because I can't open the software. Sigh.

So how do I get Word up and running again -- I need it pretty urgently!

I found the following with Google. I make no guarantees about it's
effectiveness. Replace Motive Power in the last sentence with Office.

Here is what Install Shield says about your problem. : Error 1911 can be
caused by missing dependencies, locale-specific components, corrupted object
files, and several other causes. It is a bit of a catch-all message for COM
registration problems." The error message will have a file name in it, for
example msado15.dll You can register a file manually. to do that you must
first find out where the file resides on your computer. Search all files and
folders for the file name in the error message. If you see several of them
the one in the Windows\System32 folder or the Program Files\Common Files
folder is most likely the one you want. Here is how you register that
msado15.dll file by hand. -Click the Start button -click the Run button -
enter the following line exactly as you see it, including the double
quotation marks. You need the double quotes because of the space in between
program and files, common and files. Run regsvr32.exe "c:\program
files\common files\system\ado\msado15.dll" Write down any error messages you
see. If the .dll file registers correctly, re-run the Motive Power
installation.

Well, that at least explains why setup can't register the DLL -- the DLL
doesn't exist on my system. Time to uninstall and re-install, perhaps.
