Error -192 update

B

Bob Groethe

The problem symptoms for the error -192 issue have changed for both my wife
and myself (running Panther 10.3.1 with Fast User Switching enabled).

Initially, Entourage would display an error message ("An error has occurred
-192") and the app would freeze and the 6 icons in the upper left would
disappear and turn into a grid if they were moused-over.

After a successful Typical Rebuild (notifications off) on both databases,
the next error occurred ~ a week later with one difference - the error
message window was blank except for a blue 'OK' button.

Last night, the problem happened again, but this time no error window was
displayed, just the app freeze and the disappearing icons. Also, it happened
when only one user was logged on and using Entourage.

I will do another rebuild on each database, then report our experience here.

Have you run Repair Permissions? Do you have Disk Warrior?

Thanks for your quick reply Diane!

Yes, as I have written earlier, I have run Repair Permissions. I have run it
several times in the last week and just did it again - it came up clean.

I do not own a copy of Disk Warrior. What are your thoughts? Do you want me
to rule out the possibility of Directory damage?

If you had DW, that would be an easy thing to check, but since you do not
there are some other ways to determine the origin of the problem.

Generally, I try to eliminate first the database by switching to a new
identity. Next is to create a new User in System Preferences and test
Entourage. Last culprit is the OS install.

Since your problem is duplicated in both you and your wife's User's folder,
this seems to eliminate both the User's and database as culprits.

I suggest trying an archive and install of the OS. This would clean up any
corruption in the system and takes very little time. After you update the
install, be sure to run Repair Permissions from the hard drive not the CD.

Let me know how this goes.

Thanks for your advice - I appreciate you identified a potential solution
that doesn't require DW! I will report the results...

Don't get your hopes up that this will fix it though. I just upgraded
yesterday to Panther 10.3.2 from Jaguar 10.2.6- and yes- I upgraded via
Archive and Install. Repaired permissions, etc. And today, I got the
Error -192 like everyone here is reporting.

Thanks for your post Dave!

Did you enable Fast User Switching before you got error -192?

If not, that might help to rule out Fast User Switching as a root cause.

I had Fast User Switching enabled, but mine was the only active or
logged-in account at all times.
