Error -192

Ethan Hatchett

I get an error -192 that comes up randomly in Entourage X. There is no
pattern at all. I have done both basic and advanced rebuilds of the
database in Entourage. I'm running Entourage X with the latest updates
and I have a G4 iBook running 10.3.5. Anyone know what is causing this
error? any reply would be deeply appreciated...Thanks.

My wife and I experience the same problem as you, and I have posted here on
about it repeatedly since the first time we got error -192 using Entourage
on our G4 in Nov. 03 shortly after updating from Jaguar to Panther.

The latest update to Entourage v.X was released on Oct. 12, and I was hoping
this would include a fix. Unfortunately, the Read Me only mentions a fix to
an issue that occurs when the Junk Mail filter is enabled. I just verified I
do not have this enabled, so I do not expect it will solve the -192 issue.

The MVPs who post here have offered great ideas for how to troubleshoot the
problem, but usually conclude -192 means there is a Resource Fork issue, and
applying one of the v.X updates should solve the problem. Unfortunately, I
have applied all the updates and the error still occurs.

I am curious - do you have Fast User Switching enabled? Sometimes it seems
this may be part of the issue, but I could easily be wrong. I _think_
someone posted here that they got -192 and did not have fast user switching
enabled.

Any of your thoughts/observations will be most appreciated! I also want to
get to the bottom of this...

Try turning off notifications, quitting all office apps, removing these
files:

/Users/[YourUserName]/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.autoupdate.plist
/Users/[YourUserName]//Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.certmgr.plist
/Users/[YourUserName]//Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
/Users/[YourUserName]//Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications
..plist
/Users/[YourUserName]//Library/Preferences/Microsoft/

Now, restart entourage and turn notifications back on.

Thank you Barry! We will try this and eventually report our experience via

I did as you instructed below. Should I be at all concerned that I did _not_
find certmgr.plist or autoupdate.plist preference files to remove in
Username/Library/Preferences/ ?

Again, thanks!

Barry,

It is now three days wince I applied what you described below, but
unfortunately I just got 'An Error Occurred -192'.

It happened, just after I had filed an email message in a folder. Just
before I selected 'Force Quit', a new message arrived in my Inbox. I decided
to do the 'Force Quit' then re-start Entourage to view the message.

Unfortunately, the new message is gone after restarting Entourage. :-(

I appreciate all the helpful suggestions from MVPs since the problem first
popped up after upgrading to Panther about one year ago. Unfortunately, the
issue remains unresolved. I hope it is on the radar for developers to
address.

Thank you everyone for your input on this persistent error -192.
I've been struggling with it for several months now.

I've read through this entire thread, and per all the suggestions,
here are the steps I took, and subsequently, I have not received the
error (yet!). I have not seen any mention of my step 2 as of yet.

1. Quit out of all applications and Repaired Permissions with Disk
Utility.
** 2. Ran the 10.1.6 updater. (I was already up to date with the
10.1.5 update).
3. Ensured Office Notifications was not running
4. Removed, then trashed the directory
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
5. Trashed the following two .plst files from ~/Library/Preferences:
com.microsoft.Entourage and com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications. (Did
not see the other files mentioned)
6. Emptied Trash.
7. Turned OFF Fast User Switching.
8. Restarted Computer (Dual 867 PowerPC G4 running 10.3.5)

I did not rebuild my database, as I wanted to see if these particular
step solved the issue.

I relaunched Entourage, and so far... no error.
I have Safari running pretty much always.

Again, thanks to all, and if I notice any new developments, I'll be
sure to post.
