error 2 opening registry key, cannot publish

A day ago I could publish to my website using FP 2003. I loaded some more
content (archery photos) into the local web on my laptop running xp 2000, and
tried to publish. (the computer sat unchanged between events).
When I click on publish, and FP attempts to open the remote website, I get
an error I have not seen ever before.
Error 2 opening registy key "Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server
Extensions\Ports\Port 80"

Searching the knowledgebase and web doesn't yield anything specific to FP
2003 that I can find. I REALLY need to be able to publish to my website.
The host ISP has my sites (I can't publish to any of 5 different sites) on a
Windows-based server (Rather than an apache server).
It occurs to me that maybe the FP extensions on the server are excrunged or
otherwise hosed. If I repair them using the ISP's command console, I end up
having to reupload more than a gig and I'd really like to avoid that if
possible.

I find that I can attach to the website on the ISPs server using FP2003 with
FTP, but not with http. I tested uploading a page with FTP/FP 2003, and the
page seemd to transfer but now I cannot see that page using MS IE.
??

Im getting this very same message using the 2007 Sharepoint Designer beta
2TR. I had no problem with the beta 2 version. It only started doing it after
I installed the beta 2 tech release.
Help would certainly be welcome. I'm having the same problem on 2 computers.

BTW: I did the permissions repair suggested in KB article Q264922 with no
results.
As well as a couple of other suggestions covering registry repair, etc. As
well as did a repair on Sharepoint Designer.
I did do the download of the new IE 7 this week and wondering if that may
have been the culpert. I"m not real sure when the problem started before the
IE 7 update or after. I;m not sure if I had used Sharepoint Designer between
the time I updated it to TR2 and the installation of IE 7, so it may have
been either one that caused the problem. I'm uninstalling Sharepoint Designer

Explain exactly when you are getting that error and what you are entering in the Remote site location to publish

Sorry about the confusiion.
I'm using Sharepoint Designer 2007and Expressions Web Designer 2007. Both
are giving the same error when I try to access an online website or when I
try to publish to an online website. I even installed the Expressions Web
Designer on a machine that was running Office 2003 pro, and got the same
results. I did the permissioins change as suggessted for FP with no success.
The website has FrontPage extensions enabled and is compatable with
Expressions Web Designer.
I had originally used the SharePoint Designer 2007 Beta with no problems but
when I started using the BTR2 version the problem started. I now have the
Final release version of SPD 2007 as well as the final release of Expressions
WEb Designer 2007.
I have not tried to reinstall Front Page 2003 to see if it will still work,
but fear that is the only solution. I've searched several web forums for a
soulution and there has been nothing. Though several have had the same
problem.
The registry key exists as, HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server
Extensions. But the only thing under that is the Key "All Ports" with a
(Default) value with no info in it. I even tried adding the other key
(Ports/Port 80) and setting the permissions on it, but still got the same
results.

I also wondered if the problem may have been started when the new IE7
version came out. That installation happened about the same time as the
problem started and I don't have a machine now that doesn't have the IE7
update already installed.

Sure could use some help on this. Have the same problem on 4 seperate
machines.

Just tried to log on to the website using FrontPage 2003 from a computer that
I had used before with no problem. And the only thing different is the update
to IE7, but am getting the same error here as with the other computers. There
fore I assume that it is IE7 that is giving the problem rather than any of
the programs.
I"ll have to find a computer that doesn't have IE7 on it to be sure, but at
this point I strongly suspect that is the culpurt.
I received that same error trying to log on as well as this message below
when trying to open the website.

The Folder 'http://s*********.onlinehome.us/' isn't accessable. The folder
may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the
filename contains a / or \.

Which of course it is protected by a password, but FP should ask me for the
password and user name instead of telling me it requires a password. At least
it always did before. And as the only changes in this computer, besides the
regular security updates, etc. has been the addition of IE7.

So wondering if anyone else has had this problem and found a solution or any
info from MS about this problem.
