What a mess I have made...I believe this all started when I went into
System Preferences for Mac OS 10.2.8 and went to my internet settings.
In the mail tab, I changed it to use .mac email account w/ Microsoft
Entourage selected as my Default e-mail reader. Now, I can't connect
to send mail (no trouble receiving mail) from Entourage. I get the
following message:

Error
Mail could not be sent using the account ".mac e-mail." or 'mac.com"

Explanation
A connection failure has occurred.

Error: -23016

the existing account that has worked for years (sometimes depending on
where I am connecting from it requires a change to the authentication
being off or on) is "mac.com" which was a POP account.

when the problem started occuring I went to the Mac OS internet
preferences and noticed that when "use .Mac e-mail account" is selected
the details are automatically filled in and feinted out for no changes,
but it selects an IMAP Account type. So in an atempt to solve I set-up
an IMAP account called .mac e-mail...it still didn't work.

The other strange occurence is that on the .Mac tab in internet
settings my password which is 7 characters shows as 10 characters...but
I have access to my iDisk?

Please help, haven't been able to send e-mails from Entourage for 24
hours...makes life very difficult.

Thanks. Caroline

What do you have entered as the Sending Mail (SMTP) server in your account
settings? Try setting it to the SMTP server of your ISP, with
authentication if necessary. Some ISPs, like SBC Yahoo, are no longer
allowing users to send mail via SMTP servers other than their own.
