starting a new position I have been asked to import updates to a table in a database but I can't open the file. As this file hasn't been modified since 10/21/2002 I don't know what version it was produced in so I have tried the tools/Database Utilities/convert database/to Access 2002-2003 as we are using Office 2003 this also fails to open. When I tried tools/database utilities/compact & repair database this also fails but it displays 'The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file. it is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data'. is this DB corrupt or can we do something to get into it import the update?

You should be able to open it in 2003 regardless of what version it is.

Look in the folder where the mdb is, and see if there is a file with the
same name but a 'ldb' extension. If you see it, delete the ldb.

Make a copy of the mdb.

Try opening it, and if successful compact and repair it (Tools, Database
Utilities).

If that doesn't work, try compacting using jetcomp available at
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=273956

If that doesn't work, try creating a new mdb and importing objects from the
old (you should do this even if anything above works).

If that doesn't work, you can send the backup you made to pksolutions and
see if they can restore it.
