Error -3201 when sending

H

Håkan Nylin

Hello everyone. This is my first post here so excuse me if this question has
been asked (and answered) before. I haven't found anything on the web about
this particular error message.
Ever since Office X came out I've been using Entourage now and then for my
mail accounts. First IMAP to a Netscape server, then IMAP to a Exchange
server and now with 10.1.4 I thought I should give it a try again (although,
from what I've heard, it's still IMAP and not MAPI). Anyway, after using it
for a couple of days I will receive error messages when trying to send
mails. This has happened with different SMTP servers so I'd guess it's a
local issue. Error says "Can't send mail with account xxxx" Expl "File could
not be found" Error -3201. (I'm running swedish version so the english error
message could differ slightly from what I wrote above).
After that my mail is placed in my local Outbox. When I try to re-send it,
it might work on the first try but not always. Up to five tries has
sometimes been needed.
I've tried rebuilding my database and I can't really tell, but maybe it
works a little better after that but the problem will not go away. Chances
that I implement Entourage X on 80+ Macs are close to nil if I don't get
this working better. Mail.app works fine with our Exchange server (with IMAP
and SMTP) but it would be sweet with group calendaring, address book etc in
one package.

TIA
Håkan

Hi Håkan,

I would frist try to check the SMTP settings in Entourage (eg SSl
enabled/disabled...).
If you can't maange to get it to work, you can try another workaround
that I suggested in another thread.
Get Sendmail enabler from http://www.versiontracker.com/ to activate it
on the Macs. Then set Entourage to use 127.0.0.1 as their smtp server.
Sendmail enabler helps you setting sendmail without having to compile
new m4 scripts and going through all the troubles and details of its
configuration. It will turn the Macs into SMTP servers and allow them to
send the mails themselves. Just make sure you forbid relaying since you
don't want spammers to use the Macs as their spamming platforms (relay
is off by defaults anyway).

This is a bit tricky, but it might provide you with a workaround for
this issue.

Hi Håkan,
Thanks for your input, Corentin :)
Your SSL trick didn't work out, I get the error -3260 when enabling that
(something with a connection error).

:-\
Then as Gi suggested, I'd run a TCP Flow onthe sever. The output can
help you understand what's going wrong.
Sendmail is nothing I want to fire up on my (local) machine. As I hinted in
my original mail, I have some 80+ Macs that eventually need to work with our
Exchange server and I a) don't want to have sendmail running on all machines
or b) have all clients receive error message -3201 on regular basis.

I understand your problem. It was the "easierst" workaround I could
think of. You can off course use a machine to run sendmail with relay
(resricting realy to some specific IPs) but it still would be much
better to be able to fix the original problem.
I
should add that I've never had any SMTP problems from my machine against any
server when NOT using Entourage. Been running Eudora, Mail.app, OE etc, so
this irritating error seems definitely to be Entourage-specific.
Any more ideas? I'm running blank. *rant* What bugs me the most is that MS
doesn't publish an error list. Obviously some programmer decided that -3201
means something, why can't they just share that information? *rant*

:-> Yeah... I hate these error codes. Gil gave us the corresponding
description which does not help much...
