Error -3253 & Hotmail.

Frank Rizzo

I've setup Entourage with my paid Hotmail account, however, I keep
getting error -3253 when either sending or receiving. I've googled all
over the place, but don't seem to find an answer.

Has anyone had a resolution to this case?

This error is not listed on the Error Page:

If we had more info perhaps we could help. Are you using Entourage X? After
a recent server update for Hotmail, Entourage X accounts are broken.

Try sending us as much info as possible about your account setup? Was it
working before or is this a new setup?

This is Entourage 2004.

This problem has always been present since i got the mac (2-3 months).
However, lately, it pops up much more than normal. There is nothing
unusual about the setup - it is a MacBook with 2GB of RAM - connects to
the internet via WiFi that's setup in my house. All other applications
connect to the internet fine.

What other information can I provide?

The only other useful references i could find were the following link:

Error -3253 with IMAP

The link you referenced ( Error -3253 with IMAP

I suggest monitoring the traffic between Entourage and your ISP. This might
give you clue as to what is failing.

See directions here:

Let me know if you have trouble getting it setup. It looks hard but really
isn¹t.

I've installed tcpflow, executed the command in the terminal per
instructions on the web page, attempted to get email and ... nothing.
I then realized that I should be listening on en1, not en0, but still
nothing.

What's the exact command you used?

First I used:

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

,but then I realized that I am connecting via en1 (which is the wireless
card on the Mac Book), so I used

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en1 -c

but still nothing. Even though, right after the command it says:
listening on en1

That means Entourage isn't even trying to communicate with the server.
How are you checking your Hotmail account in Entourage exactly?

Did you then try to download into your Hotmail account in Entourage?

It¹s best to put Entourage into Offline mode and manually connect a
send/receive for the account that is in question so you don¹t get info on
other accounts that will make it harder to read the report.

Just to be sure it¹s working, try opening any web page with tcpflow
activated. You¹ll see the source of the web page in tcpflow window.

That's the point. Tcpflow doesn't capture anything at all. I've tried
loading up web pages, but nothing showed up in tcpflow.

My wife called ms tech support today, while I am at work. When i get
home, I'll see what they suggested.

Are you able to browse the internet or send/receive mail from other
accounts?

Then you have tcpflow listening to the wrong network interface.

I can browse the internet fine. I don't have any other accounts.

I've tried every interface listed in the Network Utility applet in
Applications/Utilities.

Does your ISP offer a free email account? If yes, then I would try that to
see if that works. If it doesn¹t this might give you a clue as to what is
happening.

Try some of the other commands on the tcpflow page

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

What happens when you use this command?

sudo tcpflow -c -i en0 tcp port 110
