Error 5550, Explanation 5.7.1 Unable to Relay

C

Chris Watson

I¹m trying to send a business e-mail to a group of addresses, with my
original address in the To: address line and the rest in the BCC: line.
However, when I hit SEND, I receive a message that reads:

³Error: A message in your outbox could not be sent using account
Œ[email protected]¹. The server did not recognize the recipients or the server
refuses to allow you to send mail.

Explanation: Unable to relay for (e-mail address removed), Error 5550²

My sending address is valid as are the receiving addresses. If I send an
e-mail from this account to one of my other accounts, for example, it works
just fine. However, I am unable to send this message as it is currently
configured. Any suggestions?

I¹m working in ENT X (10.1.4, SR1) in Panther on a TiPB.

TIA,

Chris

It's possible that one of the addresses in the Bcc line is invalid; that is,
perhaps it is missing a "@" sign or perhaps it is missing the domain
extension (.com or .net).

If you're sending to several recipients, it's possible you've exceeded the
recipient limit. Try sending to only a few people and see if that works.
If that's the case, you should contact your mail provider and find out what
the limit is. Once you know it, you can use Paul Berkowitz's "Split
Recipients" script <http://www.scriptbuilders.net/> to send the mailing.

How many recipients?

Many ISP limit the number of recipients allowed in a mail message. A maximum
of 50 used to be fairly common, but I beleive that many have now reduced
this figure.

If you can send the same message to one or two, there¹s nothing wrong with
your setup. The error message is certainly coming from the ISP¹s mail
server, so I expect that the problem lies with the number of recipients.
