error accessing powerpoint presentation file when saving

Hi,

After I create a new presentation on my dual-processor G4 and save my
changes once or twice, PowerPoint 2004 consistently begins to report an
error accessing the file, and eventually crashes. Has anyone else
experienced this problem and is there a solution for it. (I've tried
all of the usual things - reinstalling the product, updating it, etc.)
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Among the usual things you tried, did you include using Disk Utility to
repair permissions and check your hard drive for errors?

Hello,

Are you still experiencing this issue? If so, I'd like to gather some more
information about your environment so that we can investigate.

I'd like to know:
- the exact version number of PowerPoint
- what OS you're running on
- Is Allow Fast Saves in Preferences->Save checked or unchecked?
- a rough idea of what's in the presentation when you hit the issue
- Can you repro the problem w/an empty or one slide presentation?
- How are you saving? File->Save? Save button in the toolbar? Command-S?
Some other method?
- Are you saving to your local hard drive, external Firewire or USB drive,
some removable media, or a network volume?
- Are you using File Vault?
- Are you running any anti-virus software such as Norton AntiVirus? If
yes, what version is it and is auto-protect enabled? If yes, can you repro
the problem if auto-protect is turned off?
- If you're running on Tiger (OS 10.4.x), do the problems go away if you
prevent Spotlight from indexing the folder where you're saving to? To do
this, go to System Prefernces->Spotlight->Privacy. It seems unlikely that
was the cause at the time of your post since Tiger wasn't shipping at the
time.

Thanks,
Andrew

Yes, I've seen the same thing. In my case, it was from saving the
file over the network using samba. My "solution" was to save ppt files
on the local hard drive only. I only experienced this problem using
Powerpoint 2004 (most up-to-date version of 2004 and OS X 10.4,
antivirus off, fast save on/off, Spotlight on/off, Command-S to save,
blank presentation). Indesign CS has an even worse problem
saving files over samba (seems specific to 10.4). Every other
application I use has no problems at all with saving.

Since you always seem to ask about how files are saved, is it
really the case that different things happen when you save
with Command-S, File->Save and the Save button? If so, I'm
not surprised why so many people have issues saving
files in 2004.
