Error accessing the system registry

Doug Starkey

I just migrated a user from OS9 to OS X. I simultaneously migrated them
from Office 98 to Office 2004.

Most documents open fine. But he has a few that will start to open and
then, at a given point, they will render the error dialog:
"Error accessing the system registry".

Now, this is a "limited" user in OS X, but I have granted them
privileges to everything in the Office suite (except MSN Messenger). And
I have given all users Read & Write privileges to the Office 2004 folder
and all the subfolders.

If I open this same file on the same machine while logged in as the
Administrator, the file opens fine. It is only when logging in under a
"limited" user account.

I've tried looking at Console logs but can't find anything relevant. I
search Microsoft support for some reference to this error message. That
yielded nothing.

I have deduced that the spreadsheet in question does contain some
VisualBasic macros. But, again, I have granted the user privileges to
everything in the Office 2004 folder. Is VBS hiding somewhere else in
the OS? Or does this error message mean something to someone who can
explain it to me?

TIA,

Go figure...

I went to try your suggestion and that was great. I got in with no
problems. I poked around the VB macros but didn't really see anything
relevant.

I had, just the day before, had to do some changes to privileges on some
of the items in the Office folder (~/Applications/Office 2004/Office). I
went in and granted "Application Access" (see System
Preferences>Accounts>Limited Users) to Alerts Daemon, Database Utility,
& Microsoft Database Daemon. I also ran the repair permissions function
in Disk Utility.

Why do I mention that? Because, after opening the spreadsheet and
looking at the macros, I closed it and re-opened it with macros
enabled....

And I got NO error message!!!

Beats me what fixed it. But it's working now.

Congrats!!!

I'm sure my little tip didn't have anything to do with it, but I'm glad it
is resolved. I would tend to think that one or more of the settings you
adjusted made the difference.

The unfortunate thing is that unless you want to set things back & start
over again as a learning experience, you may never know what caused/fixed
it... But perhaps its sometimes best to let sleeping dogs lie :)
