Getting this error code trying to open a previously openable file.
Have tried opening the file on several different macs, even a windows
machine running excel. The file seems to have stopped being openable
when excel ran out of memory and the machine crashed. allocated more
memory, (much more than the file should require) and still cannot
open. Have't been able to find reference to the error code.

Does it open if you drag the file to the application icon? Your crash
may have messed up the file linking (choose Get Info and select XL as
the application to open the file, if so).

I suspect it's corrupted beyond repair, but if you have access to
WinOffice 2002/3 you might try opening the file there - those versions
have some advanced recovery methods.

I've also had success with opening corrupted files with the free
OpenOffice suite:

Open Office runs on Apple's X11 for Mac OS X:
