Error configuring odbc data source

I get this error when I run any Office app (word, PPT, etc.):

Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source: MS Access Database, ODBC
error 6: Component not found in the registry. Verify that the file MS Access
Database exists and that you can access it.

Why would this occur when I run PowerPoint or Word? Anyhow, searched for
answers, found that you have to install mdac to fix. So I download mdac2.8,
and it tells me it won't run on this version of Windows (XP). I download and
install mdac 2.6, but that did not fix the problem.

Another fix is to run mdac.inf. That asks me for Windows XP SP2 files, that
I guess are not to be found. I ended up uninstalling XP SP2, re-ran
mdac.inf, and it worked. After that, Office works also.

I fixed it be removing XP SP2. That's just not right, but I don't know what
else to do to make it work.
