error:dialog box open

Do you mean that you get an error when you use the File, Open dialog?

This is usually because you have a dead mapped drive or a mapped drive that
is inaccessible. Remove the bad mapped drive and it should resolve your
problem

i have a brand new computer/drive, and i'm not running symantec or norton.

I have no idea what care and defender is but what I suspect you mean is that
Word gives an error saying that it cannot do something because a dialog box
is open. If so you should be OK just saying OK but the problem is usually
caused by a misbehaving AddIn. Does 'care and defender' have a Word AddIn
and, if so, does removing it remove the problem? Or am I just way off beam?

Thank you Suzanne.

It is highly likely that one or both of them interact with Word in some way.

Not really. I use OneCare and Defender, and they've had no adverse impact on
Word as far as I've been able to tell (much less impact than Norton had, for
example). In fact, he only cited those in response to the suggestion that
the problem was being caused by the Norton Office Plug-in. Because of what
he's using, the problem isn't Norton.

I'm still waiting for boss manno to provide a better description of the
problem. He hasn't given us much to go on.
