Error: External table is not in the expected format

I have an excel file that I linked to my access2k
database. After I run an append query to add new month
results to the excel file, I got an error
message: "External table is not in the expected format".
Further more, when I attempted to open the excel file, it
gave the error message: "excel.exe has generated errors
and will be closed by Windows"
HELP!!
