Error from MS Office XP - ""the graphics filter was unable to conv

Ken D.

Hi,

We have some VBA macro's that insert TIFF (version 6) images into a word
doc. In Office XP, we are unable to get this to work because we get a message
"the graphics filter was unable to convert this file". Now, SP3 says it has
been fixed, but we applied the service pack and it still appears to occur.
Does anyone know why this is still occuring even though it appears to be
fixed?

The problem also occurs if you insert the image via "add image from file"

Can anyone help us with this? thanks!

Ken

Hi Ken,

Based on my test, I can not reproduce the problem by using the menu to
insert a tiff into word xp.
I create the tiff by using microsoft mspaint.

Also here is KB for your referene about the post-sp3 hotfix package, you
may try to apply that.

It addressed the issue below.
After you insert a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) picture in an Office XP
document, the picture may not be displayed as expected.

For example, an inserted TIFF picture may display two-thirds of the picture
correctly, but the remaining one-third of the picture may be garbled. The
exact symptoms that you experience may be different.

Try opening the TIF in a bitmap editing application and resaving it. There's no
one TIFF format ... there are a zillion or so variants, some fairly
standardized, some not.

You may just have a variant that the Office import filters can't cope with.

Hi Peter,

I tried your suggestion and it didn't work. It still cannot process the
image.

We have tryed Office 2003 and it appears to work with that version. However,
we still need to work with Office XP (since our customers have already
purchased Office XP).

We can't do any pre-processing of the image either. Its coming from another
system and our macro is just ingesting the image, so saving it in another
format is not an option.

Anyway, this used to work in Office but does not anymore. Can anyone suggest
what we should do?

Hi Ken,

As Steve's suggestion, there are many kinds of tiff file with different
coding.
Can you send me a copy of your test tiff, so that I can try to reproduce at
my side?

You may reach me via removing "online" from my email address.

Thanks!

Hi Ken,

Sorry for delay response.
Based on my research, it seems that even if we do it manually, we will get
the error about the Office XP can not convert the TIFF file.

Based on my knowledge, it seems to be the problem that Office XP did not
support the format which encoded the TIFF file.
As we discussed before, the TIFF format have many "implementation", it may
be just a simple BMP file inside it, e.g. you can generate a TIFF by save
as tiff in Windows MSPaint tool.

Anyway, I have reported the issue to our product team, and this may take
extensive time to troubleshoot the issue.
Once I got new information, I will update you with new information ASAP.

If the issue is urgent, you may want to work with Microsoft Customer
Service and Support (CSS) for a faster resolution. Once you open a Support
incident with Microsoft CSS, a dedicated Support Professional can work with
you in a more efficient manner.
