Error identification # -2147483640

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

I began a powerpoint file on my new Mac w/the new 2008 version of office..e.g. pptx files. Upon opening this file on my old computer with Office 2004, I had to download an XML file converter, which worked initially. However, after I closed the file down and returned to start on it again, I can't open it, and I keep an error identification # -2147483640. It says to check on the microsoft website, but I can't find any info on this problem. HELP??

When you say "start on it again" - in 2004 or 2008? How are you attempting
to "start on it again"?

If 2004, make sure you have that version fully updated (11.5.1 is the
current update level) & repair disk permissions just to be on the safe side.

Once you've done that use File> Open from within the program & see if you
have success.

A quick search of the MS site (not Mactopia) indicates that the error is
VBA/command bar related, but error messages can often be misleading.

Hello,

I have had the exact same problem.
I cannot open any pwoerpoint files that my lecturers are posting on out
intranet because they are ppx files not just ppt.

What do you mean by repairing disk permission and how can I do this?

I have the most recent office for my mac because I make sure I update it
when it prompts me to and it scans on a weekly basis for new updates.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks

Hi,

If you install all the updates for Office 2004 then you should be able
to open .pptx files (there's no ppx).

To run Apple's Disk Utility:

Double-click on the hard drive icon on your desktop
Click Applications
Look in the Utilities folder
Double-click Disk Utility

When start Disk Utility, it will look around for any connected drives
(hard drives, cd, dvd, flash, anything at all that has a file system on it).

In the left panel click once on the name of your hard drive.

Then click the Verify button.

If the drive does not pass verification verify then I would run a disk
repair utility such as TechTools Pro or DiskWarrior. If you bought
AppleCare you should have received a TechTools disk.

If verify says your hard drive is OK then click the Repair Permissions
button.

Verify and Repair Permissions can take a while each to complete. On a
250 gig hard drive with lots of files allow 15 to 30 minutes for each.

I had this exact same error number (-2147483640) show up in a log
when attempting to open a pptx file with mac office power point 2008.
Changing the file extension to ppt seems to have fixed the problem.
Why power point changed the internal format for of a file I had been
using for a week is a mystery to me, but at least I didn't lose the
work I did.

I don't know if that error code is really generic, or specific to this
problem. Hopefully this will help someone else who sees it.
