ERROR: IE 6 needed to use Project Web Access

We are using Project Server 2007. We have 2 users that are getting
the following error when logging into PWA.

-----------------------
At least Internet Explorer version 6 is needed to use Project Web
Access.
Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services.
-----------------------

They definately have IE 6, possibly even IE7. This only appears on
their machines. They can log in OK on other machines.

Now, I found a few postings here and there that refer to PWA on
Project Srvr 2003 that mention issues with the Avant Browser adn I've
worked thorugh those "solutions" but nothign appears to work.

Anyone seen this recently?

Try clearing cookies and cache, also add the site to the list of
trusted sites and set the custom level to low. If this doesn't work
you probably need to clear out all the pj*.* files from the hard drive
and let your computer download them again. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately they didn't work.

In my case, the problem appears to be related to the user permissions on
Project Server. I signed on to same PC with a different user account, and I
was able to bring up the page. But when I signed back on with the other
account, I still get the error. The account I'm having a problem with is
set up as an 'administrator' on Project Server, but apparently there is some
permission setting that I'm missing.

Why the pj*.* files? Those appear to actually be USEFUL files.....

But they can become corrupt. Deleting them forces them to be re
downloaded from Project Server.

Sorry to be a pain, but what pj files exactly. There appear to be a
bunch of them in windows/system32, etc that should probably not be
deleted.

Here is what I do when I need to reload the Active X Controls:

a. Logon to the PC and rename or backup the user's profile under C:
\Documents and Settings.
b. Use the command prompt to navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program
Files and delete the PJ*.* files.
c. Open Project Web Access and re-download the Active X controls.

You can't use Windows Explorer to delete the pj* files as it doesn't
find all.

JDG,

Thanks for the response. I followed the steps you outlined, but I'm still
having the problem. However, as I pointed out earlier, if I sign on to the
same pc with a different user ID, it works. Also, once I'm connected to the
site, I can successfully sign in with the "problem ID' using the "sign in as
a different user" feature. So the user has access to the site, but cannot
make the initial connection.

Not in my case. The user never even gets to PWA, it immediately
throws the error to the page.

The same is true for me; depending on which user ID I'm using. One works,
the other gets the error page immediately.

Thanks. I don't think Avant is involved but it may well point us to the
answer. I'll check the registry and see if anything pops out.

I don't have a resolution, but I found a workaround in another posting. The
problem (at least in my case) is definitely related to Avant browser. Here's
the workaround:

1. Open the registry and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

If you have Avant installed, the key should be set to: "Avant Browser"="IEAK"

2. Delete this key and open PWA using IE (ver 6 or 7).

I believe the key is rewritten when you open Avant, so you may have to
repeat the process. I understand this is not a clean solution, but it works
for me every time.

Avant was in fact the culprit. It had been installed with IE 6 and remnants
were still arounf when the user upgraded to IE7. The fix was convoluted; he
had to uninstall Avant, search for remnants that were missed in the uninstall
and delete them from the registry and the drive; reboot; uninstall the last
to IE7 updates; reboot; and update IE7. I hope this is not always the case.

Yes, the problem turned out to be the remnants of a previous install of the
Avant browser plugin.
