Error in opening newer ppt files

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

My teacher in college made a large set of PP slides and even on my version and PC's we can't open the slide. There is a preview image but when open PP says "The file may be corrupt, in use, not a type recognized by PowerPoint, or the file extension may not match the internal format of the file." So i know this isn't a mac strict issue, but it's a issue none the less cause my teacher claims he made it on '07 version

a) if the file was saved on a PC with password protection, it can't be
opened in Mac PPT versions.

b) if the file was saved from PPT 2007, it won't be openable in PPT 2003
/Windows and previous, or in Mac PPT 2004 and previous unless the
compatibility pack for these versions is installed.
