Simple, correction required.

Error description:
If in a word document a template called C:\dirA\MyDOT.DOT
is referenced and I try to make a new reference to a
template with the same name but in another directory word
ignores the new directory as long as the template name is
the same.
I don't understand way the first used template is stored
in the document also if I change the reference.

I don't need a work around I need a correct version of
word.

Environment:
- Word 2002 (10.5522.4219) SP 2
- A template EDO_DOC.DOT in the directory
C:\EDOTest\templates
- A Document EDO_DOC.DOC with the EDO_DOC.DOT as template
in the directory C:\EDOTest\templates

Step by step:
- I Copy the complete directory C:\EDOTest to C:\EDOTest2
- I open the EDO_DOC.DOC the template path of the
document is automatically changed to EDOTest2

- I try to change the template path to the old directory
C:\EDOTest\template and store the document.
- I open the EDO_DOC.DOC again and the template path
points still to the EDOTest2\template.

- I copy the template EDO_DOC.DOT to the directory
T:\general\templates
- I open the EDO_DOC.DOC again and the template path
points still to the EDOTest2\template.

..

I have no change to point to the old or new directory
where the template with the same name is stored.

Sense:
I install default documents and templates. The customer
likes to store the template to a general directory and
tries to set the reference to the new directory. But ..

Hi Stephan

I think you will find that if you remove the template from C:\EDOTest2 you
will be able to attach to the copy in T:\general\templates, which should fit
with your customer's wishes.

Word has an order of priorities in attaching templates, based on the
filename. In 2002 (a change from earlier versions, I believe) the first
place it looks is in the same directory as the document. If it finds a
matching filename (even though the previous attachment was to a different
path) then it will attach to that template, not the original.

If no matching template name is found in this folder, Word looks in the user
templates folder and then in the workgroup templates folder - somewhere in
the order of search it will look for the original pathname too (I can't
remember the exact order).

So if your customer's T:\general\templates folder is set as the workgroup
templates folder, he will not even have to change the attachment - Word will
find the template by name anyway.

Hope this helps

I'm not sure I follow what you want Word to do, but if you want it to
search for the location of the new template then:

- You must remove or change the name of the old template folder
- The new Template folder must be a searchable path for Word.

For example if you change the User Templates or Workgroup templates to
T:\general\templates under Tools/Options/File Locations then Word
should search this location for the missing template.

Thanks

That's what I found. I know the work around and I can
solve the problem but I think it is a error of word
because you can select a template from a different path
but it has no effect. I like hidden functionality and
priorities.
