Error installing Office 97

M

Moses

I'm installing Office 97 Pro, and I get through all the files copied to 100%,
and it gives me this error -

Htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register itself in the system registry

Micosoft Office 97 Setup was not completed successfully.

Can someone advise. I'm running Windows XP home Edition.

drive.
b. Choose option 4 for a Minimal Boot at the Startup screen.
c. At the MS-DOS prompt, type c:, and then press ENTER.

Access 97 program. We tried several times to get Access 97 to load on
my system and couldn't. We even tried removing the current version of
Access from my system. It goes through the entire load process but
fails to start saying that I don't have a license. Search google for
"hatten" and "license" and all should become clear. Or you can just go
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;141373

An easy fix for this is to go and search for the Hatten.ttf font.
Rename it and reinstall Office/Access 97. Then rename the font back

Office 97 and Windows XP SP2? After a clean install of Windows XP,
drivers, and SP2 plus other windows updates Office 97 will not
complete installation.

My company recently had this problem - I discovered the solution while
trying to manually register 'htmlmarq.ocx' - Open regedit and browse
to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image

File Execution Options

You should see htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx separate keys. Rename them
to something else, ie. htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp.

You will now be able to install Office 97, including the HTML option

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what this section of the registery does or
why these files were apparently blocked (intentionally or accidently),
but this solution worked flawlessly for me. If you feel uncomfortable,
I'm betting you can rename the keys back to the originals and office
will work, but if you need to reinstall, you'll possibly have to
rename them again.

There are some work arounds, try a custom install and uncheck the HTML
options. You won't be able to install Office SR2 if I recall MS
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) disabled the
HTMLMarq.ocx (active x control) for security reasons.

If you're not going to use the web page features you can do a custom
install and choose to not install the Web Authoring tools or use the
following technique (not a MS supported one)

to modify both .ocx files whose names start with HTMLm in this
registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options from .ocx to .old

I was not able to install Office 97 Professional on Windows XP Home
SP2 at first. Office installation would give three error dialogs at
the very end of the process, something about "register" and
"workgoup", resulting in failed installation. The install would put
the Office files into the proper directories, but apparently would not
register and no Office programs appeared on the start->program menu.

I found the following solution. To install Office 97 on Windows XP
SP2,

1. First Install office WITHOUT ACCESS, and WITHOUT HTML authoring
feature.

2. Apply Office 97 service release patches SR1 and SR2. (get these
from Microsoft.com, the files I used are named SR1OFF97.exe and
sr2bof97.exe)

3. Restart the computer.

4. Insert Office 97 CD, choose "add/remove components", do not touch
any checkboxes, except now add HTML Authoring. It should install
successfully.

5. restart the computer.

6. Insert Office 97 CD, choose "add/remove components", do not touch
any checkboxes, except now add Access and the Access options you want.

7. It should complete successfully.

8. You should now be able to use Office 97 Professional normally in
Windows XP

8. You should now be able to use Office 97 Professional normally in
Windows XP
