Error logging into 'Restore and Configure Sample Data' from the start menu

I just installed sql server w/ sp4 and analysis server w/ sp4, and Project
Server w/ sp2. I started to explorer around and went to the menu 'Restore
and Configure Sample Data' from the start menu and I get an error titled
Pre-validation Error... and it says:

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3 must be installed before
configuring the sample database.

Does Project Server not recognize SQL Server sp4?

Can you click past the error? If so, then go ahead. If not, this may be a
special case with the sample databse restore function.

No I can't click ahead and I think this is related to my other post "Error
logging into Project Server via the 'Configure Microsoft Office Project
Server' menu"

Something is confused between Project Server (installed on the DC) and the
database (also on the same DC). Before I was trying to get things to run
where sql server was on a winxp machine but that wasn't working out to I
tried to simplify things by installing everything on the same machine.

Can't sanction putting applications on a DC.

I am also having problems with the same error when attempting to configure
the sample database. I have a seperate DC and Project Server/SQL2000 SP4 on
the same machine. All software is fully patched with the following:

ProjectServer2003-KB887621-WSSFILE-ENU.EXE
ProjectServer2003SP2a-KB887621-v2-FullFile-ENU.exe
ProjectServer2003SP2-KB887621-SQLFile-ENU.EXE

We are attempting to evaluate the functionality before we purchase and this
database would help speed things along.

Any idea?

I have the same problem, and my configuration is a straight single-server
installation. I tried spoofing the SQL 2000 version number in the registry,
but that didn't work. I restored the backup files to alternate databases,
but I'm hesitant to just load the data into the Project Server databases.
Has anyone found a workaround?

This is a documented issue that I also suffered, please see here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897767/en-us

This article suggests the issue only occurs with SQL implementations at SP4
that use a named instance (as mine did), but peers I have spoken with suggest
it also occurs in SQL installations that use the default instance, so it
would seem SQL 2000 SP4 is the culprit. If the wizard is run pre applying SQL
2000 SP4 there is, naturally, no issue as the sample database has already
been restored & configured.

Also note that post manually restoring the database you have to create a
site & configure Sharepoint. It is not a "simple" work around.

Good luck.

Nick.
