Error Message 0x80042108

Mad108

I am able to send, but not receive email. Getting this message: Task
'incoming.verizon.net - Sending and receiving' reported error (0x80042108):
'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you
continue to receive this message contact your server administrator or ISP.’

Using Windows 2000, Outlook 2002. Do not have NAV or firewall on the
computer.

Below is the error log, I’d appreciate any ideas anybody might have on what
could be causing this problem. Verizon says the problem is not at their end.

Hello,

Yes, I checked with Verizon, and they went through all the account settings
and verified they were correct. It was at that point they said the problem is
not on their end. The email worked at one time with the same account
settings as it now has.

Open a command prompt window and see if you can ping the server

ping mail.verizon.net

(or whatever the POP server name is). If that works, try to connect to it
like a POP client:

telnet mail.verizon.net 110
+OK Messaging Multiplexor (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2 Patch
0.04 (
built Dec 24 2004)) <[email protected]>
quit

did telnet to mail.verizon.net and got this:

+OK Messaging Multiplexor (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2 Patch
0.04 (
built Dec 24 2004)) <[email protected]>
+OK goodbye

Connection to host lost.

tried telnet to incoming.verizon.net 110 (this is the incoming mail server
(POP3):

C:\>telnet incoming.verizon.net 110
Connecting To incoming.verizon.net...Could not open a connection to host on
port
110 : Connect failed

telnet to outgoing.verizon.net 25 (this is the outgoing mail server (SMTP):

220 vms042pub.verizon.net -- Server ESMTP (Sun Java System Messaging Server

HotFix 0.04 (built Dec 24 2004))
221 2.3.0 Bye received. Goodbye.

So - does this mean i am connecting ok to all of them except the incoming
server on port 110? And if so does this give you a clue as to what is going
on?

Thanks for your help

incoming, port 110 - the pop3 server is incoming.verizon.net

outgoing, port 25 - the SMTP is outgoing.verizon.net

this is what verizon tells you to use, all of the outlook account setting
are correct according to them

did telnet to mail.verizon.net and got this:

+OK Messaging Multiplexor (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2
Patch
0.04 (
built Dec 24 2004)) <[email protected]>
+OK goodbye

This is a connection to port 110, for sure. This is exactly what I get when
connecting to port 110. The default telnet port is port 23 and
mail.verizon.net doesn't listen on that port, so it can't respond.
tried telnet to incoming.verizon.net 110 (this is the incoming mail
server (POP3):

C:\>telnet incoming.verizon.net 110
Connecting To incoming.verizon.net...Could not open a connection to
host on port
110 : Connect failed

Since "incoming.verizon.net" and "mail.verizon.net" are physically the same
machine, you should get exactly the same response. I do. It also shouldn't
matter which of the two names you use. However, try using mail.verizon.net
instead of incoming.verizon.net in your account.

Thanks Brian, will try this when I get home and let you know what happens. I
am not sure why verizon instructs users to set it at incoming.verizon.net
instead of mail.verizon.net

Brian,

Thanks for all your help, I'm receiving mail (for now) using
mail.verizon.net. I'll be interested to contact verizon and ask what is
going on, and why they never bothered to suggest trying that instead of
incoming.verizon.net.

I'm glad, but I'm sure puzzled because those names both point to the same
machine:

$ nslookup mail.verizon.net
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: MAIL.VERIZON.NET
Address: 206.46.232.10

$ nslookup incoming.verizon.net

I have had the same problem with error 0x80042108 & 0x80042109 in the last
couple of days. This was after I had installed the latest Office 2003 SP2
update! When I restored to a time prior to this update all was OK. The next
night auto update ran and auto-installed the same update, and the next day
the same errors were back. Another restore and all was OK again!
Have you by any chance installed this update lately???

I am able to send, but not receive email. Getting this message: Task
'incoming.verizon.net - Sending and receiving' reported error (0x80042108):
'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you
continue to receive this message contact your server administrator or ISP.’

Using Windows 2000, Outlook 2002. Do not have NAV or firewall on the
computer.

Below is the error log, I’d appreciate any ideas anybody might have on what
could be causing this problem. Verizon says the problem is not at their end.

I don't know if this applies to you, but I disabled the Trend Micro Anti-Spam
Toolbar beta I was using to make my SP2 patched Outlook 2003 work again.
I did not need to reverse the service pack at all.
