error message: 0x800CCC67 using Charter & Verizon

I was a former customer of Charter (for years). I have recently switched to
Verizon DSL. However, I wanted to keep my old Charter address, which I have
migrated to another family member's account.

I have 2 PCs at home. One Desktop (with Windows XP) and one Laptop (with
Windows Vista). The desktop has Outlook while the laptop has Windows Mail.

With BOTH computers, I am able to receive e-mails but unable to send. I get
the "error message: 0x800CCC67" message. I have tried several different
things to re-configure the accounts. I tried changing the Port # from 25 to
587 as one thread suggested. That didn't work. I also tried changing the
POP and SMTP servers. I have tried many combinations of the following:

POP: POP.CHARTER.NET
MAIL.CHARTER.NET

SMTP: SMTP.CHARTER.NET
MAIL.CHARTER.NET
OUTGOING.VERIZON.NET

NONE of the above-mentioned combinations worked. I'm sure that there is a
way to configure it so that this would work. Again, I want to keep my
Charter e-mail address since I've been using it for YEARS. Verizon told me
that it cannot be configured and that I need a Verizon e-mail address.
However, since I can receive Charter e-mails, I should be able to send them
also.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON THIS MATTER??

If you have dropped your Charter account, clearly you're not going to be
able to use the Charter mail servers any more nor a Charter address. Only
if you keep your account current will Charter maintain the mailbox.

However, as I had mentioned, I migrated my address to another family
member's account, of which is still active. I am able to receive e-mails to
my Charter address but am not able to send out.

I am looking to configure both of my computers to support this. Using
Verizon as my ISP shouldn't be a problem. When you use wireless networks for
laptops, there never seems to be problems receiving/sending e-mails,
regardless of the ISP that they (people providing the signal) use.

Again, my e-mail address was migrated from my old (disconnected) account and
transferred to my family's (active) account.

I just need to configure the settings to be able to send.

So then your statement that you were "former" Charter subscriber is a little
misleading. Some is still subscribed to Charter and now you wish to use
what is now their address.

What you describe is usually caused by not authenticating to the outgoing
server. However, from what I can find on Charter's help pages seems to
indicate that they don't support outgoing authentication. So, specify
mail.charter.net as the POP server, specify your Charter credentials in the
"Login Information" area of the account, enter your Charter address in the
"E-mal Address" field, but make your outgoing server outgoing.verizon.net.
Click More Settings and on the Outgoing Server tab, click the box that says
"My outgoing server requires authentication" and then select the radio
button labeled "Log on using" and enter your Verizon credentials in the
username and password fields. This should allow you to send messages
through Verizon's SMTP server using your Charter address.

You can only access 'smtp.charter.net' from a Charter IP address, based on
my testing. Trying to connect from a Verizon IP address will fail, thus:

| C:\Documents and Settings\Norman>telnet smtp.charter.net 25
| Connecting To smtp.charter.net...
| 421 charter.net connection refused from [69.110.149.81]
|
|
| Connection to host lost.

Except that the IP address shown will by your Verizon IP address instead of
the AT&T IP address shown in my test.

You may be able to configure MS Outlook to use your Charter email address
with the Verizon SMTP server.

I did just that AND IT WORKED!! Thank you VERY much for your help with
this. It was actually pretty simple to fix. I knew that there had to be a
way to configure it but when you call either Charter or Verizon, they tell
you it can't be done. But we (thanks to you) got it working!
