Error message -3212

I recently replaced Microsoft Office 2004 with 2008 (Mac Mini running
10.4.11). Now any attempt to send or receive gives me error message
-3212, which I can't find on the Entourage troubleshooting site. (I
don't see a way to attach screenshots to this message; basically,
there's no clue in the error message. It simply says "mail could not
be sent/received," followed by the account name. It happens on all my
accounts.) I'm definitely online, since Firefox, Thunderbird and Mail
all work fine.

I've confirmed the TCP/IP setting in network preferences, and have
checked and double-checked my account information numerous times. When
I try the technique of seeing if Entourage will work on another user,
I get the message that I have "insufficient permissions to use this
folder"—which appears to mean that I can't open the program at all,
since it never gets past the opening logo. This continued even after I
went into the permissions and changed them to give me both read and
write in the new user, and rebooted.

I'm out of ideas, and have dutifully searched FAQs far and wide. Can
anyone help me? (Why don't you use Thunderbird or Mail instead, you
ask? Because I hate them both, probably because I'm accustomed to
Entourage. A major motivation to install Office 2008 was that my 2004
version of Entourage had gone buggy, Microsoft style.)

Thanks for any clues you have to offer.

Let's first start by checking your network traffic.
Test your network traffic.

See directions here for tcpflow:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently that do is EavesDrop....Let it
capture some stuff then double-click any of the lines of text in the main
window to see more detail.

<http://www.baurhome.net/software/eavesdrop/index.html>

This will tell you what is failing. There is an example on the TCP link for
what you will see.

You can post a screenshot link using a service like ImageShack.

How To Post Screen Shots To Newsgroups

1. On your keyboard, press Command-Shift-4.
2. On your keyboard, press the space bar.
3. Click the window you want. A picture file will appear on the desktop.
4. Go to http://imageshack.us/.
5. Click Browse, then navigate to and select the picture file.
6. Click "host it!".
7. Paste the "Show image to friends" URL in a newsgroup message.

Let's try in a new Entourage Identity before we tackle the other user
problem. Create a new Identity in Entourage under "Entourage" in the Menu
bar. Enter your account info. Be sure to select "leave on server" under the
options tab for this test. Does it work?

If no, then we test in a new User. You didn't mention if Entourage would
open in a new blank Identity in the new User. Was it just your Identity or
Entourage that failed to open? I'm thinking permissions if it was your
Identity.

Send & Receive problems are the most difficult to solve because the contain
so many variables. Once we can narrow down if the problem is in your User
folder, your Identity, or some change to your settings we can solve the
problem. We've had several reports where ISPs did a security upgrade and did
not notify their customers to change the advanced setting for their SMTP. I
would double check the web site for your for SMTP settings.
