Error message about "Links" when printing presentation

E

Erin

We've just implemented SP3 for Office XP. Now we're getting sporadic error
messages when we send a presentation to print:

"This presentation contains links to other files. If you update the
links....If you don't update the links....Button: Update Links, Button:
Cancel, Button: Help"

All presentations with this error message DO NOT have user created links in
the presentation.

Some files have embedded Word tables or Excel charts, and the feature in PPT
for "Print inserted objects at printer resolution" is enabled -- but when the
feature is disabled the presentation will USUALLY stop throwing the Links
error message.

It's very sporadic, and annoying more than disrupting. We'd like to figure
out what's causing this error message. Did not see this with SP2. Happened
immediately after implementation of SP3.

We're running OXP SP3 on WinXP SP1 (yes, really, SP1).

I've looked through the user group and didn't see anyone else asking about
this -- but has anyone else seen this? Nothing on KnowledgeBase that I could
find.

Thanks!

Erin, are you sure the Word tables and Excel charts don't have links to the
original files? If you go to Edit|Links it should show you if there is
anything in the file that uses an OLE link, which is what would cause this
error.

Oh, wait. Lookit this.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;835728 Sounds like
the *exact* problem you described below. Seems there's a hotfix for it. Just
call MS. The documentation you'll read in the links on the KB article may
make it seem as if they'll charge you for the call/hotfix, but they really
won't.

Echo:

Thank you for the link to the Knowledge base...unfortunately, the hotfix is
for PowerPoint 2003 -- and we're on 2002.

I did check the Word and Excel tables, and it didn't appear that they were
linked to anything. Plus, we're getting the error messages in files that have
no Word or Excel tables. About the only "link" I can figure is that we have
our company templates on the LAN, accessed through a shared drive. But, if it
was these "linked" templates, then a lot more people would have the error
message, since the bulk of our PPT files are created based off of these
templates.

I'll see if MS will create a hotfix for PPT 2002 -- it will be a difficult
sell since we can't get the errors to happen reliably/consistently.

Thank you for the help, though. It's appreciated!

Oh, man. I don't know what I was thinking -- you stated very clearly you're
using Office XP SP3.

I hope you find that MS has a hotfix available for Office XP. But yeah, at
this point you'll need to call them.
