Error message blocking Office 2003 upgrade installation

G

Ginny Mayer

When I try to upgrade to Office 2003 (I currently have Windows XP) I get an
error message "Business Contact Manager for Outlook Setup Wizard Error" with
the message that MS Office Outlook 2003 must be installed before I can
install Bus. Contact Manager. The problem is, I am trying to upgrade to
Office 2003, so this is a "Catch 22." I would welcome any advice as to how I
can get it to install the Office 2003 upgrade in the first place (and then
I'll worry about Outlook 2003, Business Contact Manager, etc.). I am very
"non-technical" and had hoped the CD Wizard would just go through its
"normal" steps so I hope that someone has a recommendation that can be
helpful to a "lay user." Thanks!

Install Office 2003 first with all options, then install Office Outlook
Business Contact Manager.

Hi, Milly

Thanks, but the "Catch 22" I mentioned is that it's telling me I need to
install Office 2003 before I can install Office Outlook Business Contact
Manager (which is not something I'm trying to do) while not letting me
install Office 2003, which is what I'm trying to do. My goal is to install
Office 2003 and it's not letting me because of that error message. Hence a
"Catch 22."

Any additional suggestions would be most welcome.:) -- Ginny

Why can't you complete the upgrade to Office 2003? Is it asking for a
qualifying product in order to install? Do you have a qualifying product?
Are you using CD 1 of the Office 2003 upgrade to install first?

Milly,

Why the reference to furious head scratching? And getting scolded about
"keeping the discussion intact?" (I apparently accidently e-mailed to the
sender instead of the group). I can't believe I tried this out for the first
time and someone chose to insult and scold me. So much for using this site!

Goodbye,

Whoa! Take a deep breath and slow down. :)

What you are seeing is standard on every one of Milly's reply. Occasionally
she replies to me I get the "after furious head scratching" too. (I think
it's funny but I also know Milly so perhaps that makes a difference.)

Regarding the "keep discussion intact". That isn't a scolding. That's just
part of Milly's signature and it's not uncommon to see it, or similar
wording, on most signatures (including mine). You are accessing the
newsgroups through the Microsoft site and those are not private discussion
boards. The newsgroups can be accessed from many websites and by various
newsreaders.

Some web sites, such as Google Groups, and newsreaders, such as Outlook
Express, include a Reply button which will send the reply directly to the
author. The "standard" signature is just a reminder to use the Reply to
Group button so the discussion stays in the newsgroup in order to benefit
everyone who reads the thread. Believe it or not, there are a lot of lurkers
to read the groups and don't directly participate in order to learn. And
Google, for example, archives all the newsgroup posts so questions asked
today can benefit those who search for previously asked questions and find
answers. Plus, if I tried to answer every private email sent to me asking a
question I wouldn't have time for the newsgroups, which can help out many
instead of a single individual. Not to mention you'd have to wait for my
response which could be days if I'm not around and if it's posted in the
newsgroup someone else will likely respond in a timely fashion which means
you get your answer faster. (And there's the matter of my paying clients who
wouldn't be thrilled if I were answering questions privately for free. ;-) )

I DO hope you didn't leave for good and see my response and not spend the
rest of a beautiful day upset over a simple misunderstanding. :)

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email cannot be acknowledged.

If you review the archives of this group, you will see it is the signature I have used for the past several years for every response. If you are going to take it personally, then perhaps someone else should help you. Most posters find it funny. As for the admonition to not email me personally, YOU try dealing with dozens of emails weekly asking for one on one assistance.

Bye - someone else can pick up this thread since I have apparently offended your tender sensibilities.

Thanks, Beth

I hope this is replying to the group rather than to Beth personally or to
the wrong thread; if it is I apologize because I may not know how to use the
system properly. Anyway, I have been an online instructor for 2 accredited
universities for 10 years and it has been pretty well drilled into my head
that I may not respond to a student's inquiry in a public forum by making a
comment that appears personal (Boy, Susie, that question really got to you,
didn't it?) nor chide someone for mistakenly posting to my inbox instead of
to the classroom because it is likely they are fumbling with the technology,
not willfully trying to ignore instructions. I guess I've been taught to
operate on a presumption of high levels of sensitivity, so I wasn't prepared
for the "joshing" spirit here.

Sorry for the "flap" and I will try to appreciate the tongue-in-cheek
spirit. As to the technological problem, I am far short of being able to
handle this myself, since apparently I cannot even post to the user group
correctly <G> so I think the best solution for me for this (to me) difficult
problem is to called my computer consultant over for an appoinment. If I have
easier problem I will check again here at some future time, so I'm not "going
away mad," just going away semi-computer-illiterate even though I rely so
heavily on them.:)

Thanks again,

Ginny

I'm glad you saw my response. The public newsgroups are indeed different
from the private boards used by universities. There are a few in which
flaming is considered the norm. For the most part, it isn't here (at least
most of us try to create a pleasant environment) but should you venture into
those that aren't a word of advice, don't fall into their trap and respond -
that's exactly what they want. I don't think I'll ever understand the mind
of a flamer who flames for the thrill.

Anyway, don't worry about posting incorrectly. Since you are using the MS
site to access the newsgroups you can only reply to the group since there
isn't an option to reply to the author. And you DID post correctly, as I
noted, the "please reply to the newsgroup" bit is just part of a standard
signature that is on every reply. :)
