Error message "Cannot find" on launching Excel

On opening a spreadsheet I get the message "Cannot find ...(file name)", and then must click Cancel for the multitude of files the program can't find, followed by clocking Okay for a series of messages "External copy: file format is not valid."

Yes, this is a spreadsheet that reads information from other (.csv) files — but normally only when I tell it to, after I have launched them. I have not moved the main spreadsheet or the .csv files.

All can think is that, because I have been working in another spreadsheet recently, somehow I have upset Excel's directory thread.

How do I resolve this issue?

In Excel> Preferences> Edit check the box labeled "Ask to update automatic
links". Additionally, Links to file types other than Excel files ca be set
to Manual updating rather than Automatic in the Edit> Links dialog.
