Error Message ".doc file not available"

jjennings

I have just installed Word 2003, and now cannot open
documents created in Word 2000. I get the error
message: "file xxx.doc is not available - even although
it is both available and accessible in other programs
such as WordPad and PageMaker.

To add insult to injury, Microsoft want to charge me
before they will answer the question - it's THEIR
program, they should be paying ME because it doesn't work!

See the article "How to re-register Word when problems crop up opening
files. Word files do not open in the desired version of Word when you
double-click them in Windows Explorer, or when opening them from the Desktop
or Explorer, a series of messages appear claiming that the file cannot be
opened." at:

Hope this helps

Thank you. Unfortunately the suggested fix did not work. I continue to get
the message "file xxx.doc is not available" when trying to open any Word doc
created in Word 2000 - yet the same doc opens in WordPad perfectly OK.
Anybody else got any suggestions?

This could be caused by a conflict with the Norton Office Plug-in. See “OFF:
Cannot Open Office Documents or Cannot Edit Inserted Objects After You
Install Office XP Service Pack 2 or Office 2000 Service Pack 3” at

Thank you Suzanne - but alas, still no change when disabling Norton, or when
running LiveUpdate.
In any case I have not installed Office XP SP2.
Any other suggestions anyone?
