Error message every time I try to quit Word

Every time I try to quit Word, whether I've actually used Word or just opened it by accident, I get the following: "A file error has occurred. Check your network connections or make sure the disk is properly inserted and not defective. (Normal.dotm)." Then I click "OK," and I get a Save dialog box: Save As: Normal.dotm. If I say "Save," nothing happens it just stays there, if I say "Cancel" I get "Changes have been made that affect the global template, "Normal". Do you want to save those changes?" Whether I answer "Don't Save", or "Save," I get the following: "Changes have been made that affect the global template, "Normal". Do you want to save those changes?" If I say "Save," nothing happens, if I say "Don't Save," it finally quits. I just downloaded 12.1.7 hoping that this would get fixed, but I guess it must be something I did. Help!

OK, so "something" is preventing Word from saving the file "Normal.dotm"

Find that file, open it by using File>Open to open it, type and remove a
space, then save it. Make sure no other documents are open at the time.

The default location is:
/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates

But you may have moved it: it can be "anywhere".

If Normal.dotm is the real problem, the error message should tell you more.
Tell us what it says. It may be that the file has been set read-only, or
that you do not have access to the folder it is in, or some other user or
application has the file open.

Hope this helps
