Error Message help!

LeoM.

Hello,
I am having some issues for the last few days. I am getting the following
svchost.exe - Application Error " The instruction at 0x5018d8cd referenced
memory at 0x02838000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate
program Click CANCEL to debug the Program".

My system has been freezing whenever I click on either of these options.
I'm running Windows XP Pro and I had my automatic updates on. I live in So
Cal and we had a power outage on Tuesday and that is when the issue started.
Any ideas.

Thanks, Leo

it sounds like there
is a service / program that
is dysfunctional. but which
one, i cannot say~

try another boot mode
and see if there is a
difference, improvement
or a repetition of the
error. here are the
instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222

i suggest to test safemode
and work in it as much as
you can - keeping in mind
that safemode only loads
pure windows and no non
windows software.

then reboot and test safemode
with networking. this option
will allow an internet connection,
so you can test your browser, etc.

well,

svchost.exe is a system file
and there are two possibilities
as to the cause of the malfunction.

1) there are counterfeits
that replace the genuine version
with one that is corrupted or
designed to be a virus.

so it could be an infection that
you are experiencing and should
run an antiviral program.
do you have any?

2) but if it is not a virus then
the svchost.exe is having
issues hosting a service.

in this respect, we would
need to know which service / program
may be corrupting svchost.exe and
the rest of your system.

unfortunately, i couldn't tell you which
service it may be since everyone
in the world loads different programs.

basically, what little i have found
on the error numbers, it may suggest
something to do with the video aspect
of your system.

so a game or a graphics hungry program
that is poorly written or incompatible
with your system might be the problem.

as mentioned testing your pc in
the safemode environments might
be helpful. essentially, if your
system didn't crash in safemode like
in normal mode, then this would
be a clue.

another thing you might try is
to use a restore your pc to a
date when it was functional.

so if your pc has been "bad"
the past few days, then see if
you can find a "good" date to
restore the computer to.

here are the instruction:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

if you can not access normal mode
then you can perform the feature above
in safemode.

here is some fyi on svchost.exe:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

unfortunately, although it provides
a method to view the processes
running by svchost, it may not be
helpful if you try in safemode, as
the malfunction you are experiencing
may only show up in normal mode.

then ultimately, maybe using
the windows cd and make it
"repair your windows" might
resolve the function as well.
