error message in office

Your help would be greatly appreciated. I try to open microsoft word or any
other office program and it sends me a message
"Microsoft word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience"

I have also tried to open Set Program Access and Defaults on the start menu
and the error message is
"Run a DLL as a App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

I have been on the microsoft website and all the updates are current. Any
ideas as to the problem. I can use the internet all day long but cannot
access outlook, word or any other program. Even when it gives me the option
to start the program in safe mode, it does not open.
