Error message in Word 2004

Whenever I click on a document to open it in Word 2004, I get an error
message thay says:

There is not enough memory or disk space to run the converter
"Word 97-2004 import"

Since I have 1 GB of RAM and 30 GB of an 80 GB drive that is empty, I
don't understand this. Once Word is open, I can click on the document
and it opens without the error message. It only happens if I click on a
document while Word is not running. Can anyone tell me what might be
going on?
