Error message in Word

I am working in word. The only applications open is word and outlook.

Then I get the following message:
"You are working without a word workfile and memory is nearly full. Save
your work."

I can't select anything except the save option. Then the computer hangs and
I have to use Crt Alt delete to close word, subsequently loosing all new data.

How do I fix this?
