Error message on Word 2002

I want to print on a custom sized paper 178 x 137 mm and have set the 'page
set' up in Word 2002 and my printer (HP5650) to use that size. When trying to
print I get an error mesage from the printer "Paper Size Error - the selected
paper is larger than than the paper in the tray, change either the paper or
the selection".

I also get an error message on Word when trying to investigate using options
in 'Tools', "the measurement must be between 0cm and 55.87cm" What
measurement is it referring to? This message only comes up when I have
selected th print tab and then click ok - even when I have not changed any
settings. I have to use the cancel button.

I only have these problems when trying to print on a custom size paper and
have suffered this for many months resorting to having to use A4 paper all
the time. Please can somebody help this is driving me nuts.

I am glad I am not the only one, I was concerned that I was missing something
very basic, From what you say that does not seem to be the case.

I get this problem on every new document. I just cannot print on a custom
sized paper, the only sizes I can use are the ones preset into the print
dialogue box.

It seems there may be a bug somewhere but is it with the printer driver
(HP5650) or with 'Word', MS Office or even Windows XP home?

Regards
John

I have sent to problem to Hewlet PAckard as it may have something to do with
thier driver possibly.

I have just had a reply from HP. Is there any way I can forward the e-mail to
you?

Thanks for forwarding me thier email and I'm glad you found a
solution. :)

For the benefit of others who may be searching for the same solution
here's an excerpt from the email:

========================
This issue happens because the printer scans the width of the paper
before printing. If the paper size setting in the printer driver does
not match the paper actually loaded in the printer, the printer
reports a paper mismatch.

=== Solution 1 ===
After the error message opens, press the Resume button. The document
will then print correctly.

=== Solution 2 ===
NOTE: If you often print on paper types other than Plain Paper or
Envelopes, use Solution 1 or 3 instead. Disable the automatic
paper-type sensor by performing the following procedure:

1. Open the Printers folder. To do so, click Start, point to Settings,
and then click Printers. For Windows XP Classic View, click Start,
Control Panel, and then Printers & Faxes.
2. Right-click the icon for the HP Deskjet printer.
3. Click Printing Preferences.
4. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
5. Click the drop-down box under Type is: and select Plain paper.
6. Click OK.
7. Print the document again. The document should print without any
errors.

=== Solution 3 ===
In Microsoft Word, set the paper size to the appropriate size.

NOTE: Do not set the paper size from the Printers folder or from the
printer icon located in the lower-right hand corner of the screen next
to the time, because this will affect all applications. Only set the
paper size in MS Word.

1. Within Microsoft Word, click File, then Print.
2. Make sure that the appropriate Deskjet printer is selected. Click
Properties.
3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
4. Set the paper size to the appropriate size.
5. Click OK on the Printer Properties screen.
6. Click Cancel on the Print dialog box.
7. Print the envelope using the Envelopes & Labels feature in
Microsoft Word. The document should print without any errors.
