error message running Word

Hi group,
I got this error message, which then was followed by Word shutting down:

Microsoft Visual C++Runtime Library
Runtime error
Program C:/Program files/Microsoft Office/Office 10/WINWORD.EXE

Abnormal program termination

I have no idea what this was, except that it cost me the document I was
drafting.

What should I check? How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

(I'm running Windows XP Pro, on a Dell Pentium 4.)
