I am using an iBook G4, running OS 10.4.8, Entourage 2004.

I was in the middle of receiving/downloading a large number of messages
when Entourage got "stuck". I quit and when I tried to continue to
receive messages, I received the error message "Error Message: The POP
server returned an unexpected reply to a command that Entourage
issued." (Error -16999).

I have deleted the 15 first (oldest) messages in the inbox via the
server. I have tried selecting and unselecting the use account with
secure password option. Still I get the error message. If it was a
server problem, I would assume it would also be affecting my
co-workers. None of them are having problems.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

I got it working! I connected the mail server so that I could see the
messages on the server via Entourage and just kept deleting messages
until the mail began downloading. (I had to delete several hundred
emails before it began working).
