Error message when closing Word 2007

T

Travis

One of my users is getting an error message just about everytime he closes
word 2007. He gets the following message.

Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.

At one point, he was getting another error message stating the temp file for
autorecovery could not be found; but that message seems to have gone away on
its own.

The error appears mainly when attachments are opened in Outlook, but not
always. The documents that are opened are from older versions of Word, but
2007 Word documents have caused the same problem. It doesn't seem to matter
if the red X is used to close or from the Office button.

This user's Powerpoint is also behaving the same way; whenever he closes
Powerpoint, even without a document open, the same message appears.

Just to give an idea of the machine, it is a Dell Latitude D630 Intel Core 2
Duo 2.3 GHz with 1 GB of RAM with Windows XP SP 2. Embassy trust suite is
running on the machine, as is Symantec 10.1.4. I have removed all add-ins to
Word, and have gone so far to uninstall Office and reinstall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having a similar problem. About a week ago, Word started giving me the
same error message -- "Word has encountered a problem and needs to close" --
whenever I exit Word without saving the document first. Then it would open
the program again to a new document. It is becoming very annoying, because I
now have to go through two extra steps every time I want to close a document.
This has never happened before last week.

Would love some help with this one.

I checked this site earlier based on a recommendation from another thread in
this forum. I didn't find any answers to my problem, however, I will check
again.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but I read through this document and I'm still not
sure how it's supposed to help me. The explanations it gives for why those
problems make the program shut down when first opened don't seem to apply to
the error message I get when I shut down Word. Are you saying I should just
problem-shoot by trying each solution anyway?

I scanned this site again and did not find anything on the error that I am
receiving. Still looking for any advice.

Word closes down properly when in Safe Mode. However, I don't think the user
receives the error when closing a Word document that is not attached to an
e-mail.

Something else that I have discovered, I just used Remote Desktop to connect
to his PC. When I opened a Word document that was attached to an e-mail in
Outlook and then closed the document, I did not receive the error. I
disconnected and had the user do the same thing and it gave him the error.

Would Remote Desktop be disabling something that would cause Word to show
the error when closing?

I think that is a red herring. You must save the attached document to the
local hard drive before opening it. This is one of the user's principal
problems.

Is this problem only ever for email attachments? If it doesn't do it at any
other time, that is the solution.

If it does it when opening other documents and closing Word but it is OK in
Safe Mode, it suggests an incompatible third party add-in as the most likely
cause.

I tried to save the document from Outlook by right clicking and saving to the
local hard drive, opening and closing the document, and the error still
appears.

To give some more info. This is only happening on Word documents that are
attached to e-mails, does not seem to be affecting any other document types.
If the user creates a document, sends it to a user with an older version of
Office, and receives it back with changes made in the old version, the user
does not receive an error when closing the document.

This error is also showing everytime Powerpoint is closed, even if a
document is not open, just the application. Below are some items from Event
Viewer for both Word and Powerpoint.

D: 3, Application Name: Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Application Version:
12.0.4518.1014, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.4518.1014. This session lasted
2 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a crash

Faulting application winword.exe, version 12.0.4518.1014, stamp 45428028,
faulting module hpz3r4v2.dll, version 61.63.247.0, stamp 45949947, debug? 0,
fault address 0x00045a98.

The thing to note about the Powerpoint entry is that it did not end in a
crash, the red X was clicked to close the application.

I am having the same problem as well. I haven't had a problem with email,
but I don't believe I've had to open any 2007 doc's via email lately.

If I'm working on a 2007 docx, save, and then exit, it usually works fine.

If I try and exit and then save when prompted to, Word will save the file
(thankfully!), but then restart with the same error messages the others are
having and then Word reopens with the same document.

If I'm working on a file from a removable drive, I get this message "Word
cannot open the file ~WRS{E1FDF6D5-783F-4417-B105-586BB16FD679}.
If it is stored on your computer, there may be a problem with yor hardware.
If the file is stored on the network, there may be a problem with the
network connection.
If you can copy the file, try saving the file in another location and
opening it there."
Then Word will reopen to a blank document.

Usually, if I open a document, type and then exit without saving when
prompted, Word exits just fine.

So far, this seems the most promising, but it's for Vista. I'm running XP
and don't want to fiddle with the registry if I don't have to.

I get this same error with Word 2007 and Vista Premium. Each time I close
Word whether I open a documnet or not. It will some times try to restart,
other times it just tells me there has been an error and it will need to
close. I have not lost any documents though. Nothing to do with Mail either,
just Word alone open on my system.

I am getting exactly the same behavior, have tried repairing office,
reinstalling, applying all available updates from the Microsoft
updates site, disabling all plug ins...
Anyone get the problem solved?

and just to save a little time... this didn't help me:
See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm which
covers
closing problems too despite its name.

In safe mode the behaviour is exactly the same.
Also when all plugins are disabled... Nothing I have yet done has
made a dent in the this problem:

Opening attachments in Outlook and Powerpoint post close crashes:

Even if the document is saved to the hd first before opening it

This is for Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents that are
attached to e-mails, does not seem to be affecting any other document
types.

This error is also showing everytime Powerpoint is closed, even if a
document is not open, just the application.
The thing to note about the Powerpoint entry is that it did not end in
a
crash, the red X was clicked to close the application.

That sounds more like you have a corrupt or incompatible printer driver set
as default. There is nothing in common between Word and PowerPoint other
than they will both crash out without a sound printer driver set as default.
Also, in Outlook, if you open a document directly (without saving the the
HDD), the Outlook editor will open rather than Word. It too needs a sound
printer driver. That's the only think I can think that is common to all
three apps (other than your PC's hardware or firmware).
