Error Message when opening a linked document

I have a user that opens a Word document that has links to an Excel
spreadsheet. Normally she will open the Word doc then opens the spreadsheet,
but now when the spreadsheet opens, she gets the following error:

"A document with the name "0Xbook.xls" is already open. You cannot open two
documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders.
To open the second document, either close the document thats currently open,
or rename one of the documents."

She has been using this spreadsheet for a couple of years with no issues
until the past couple of weeks. There have been no changes to her system at
all. She is running office 2002.

Does she encounter the same message if she tries to open an Excel workbook
outside the application? Such as double-clicking a file on the Desktop or in
an Exploring window? If so then go to Start/Run and run the following
command:

excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.

I had already tried to reregister excel with no luck. I have done a little
more research and found the following: When the Word document opens, you are
prompted to update the links. If you dont update the links then go in and
manually update them, it seems to work fine.
