Dear all:

I have been experiencing a problem with Excel everytime I try to open a
file. Whenever I double-click on an Excel document the application begins to
load and when the document would be about to open an error message is
displayed.

The message says:

" An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework
Library. "

I will also try to post an image of the message here in JPEG format although
I am not sure this newsgroup supports images.

After this happens I click on the OK button that appears with the message
and Excel opens but the document doesn't. Then I double-click again on the
same document and this time it opens. This same behavior applies to Word and
Word documents.

Any ideas of what may be causing this to happen ?

I am running the latest version of Office (11.3.5) and the latest version of
OS X (10.4.10).

Thank you in advance for your help.

The problem is usually that office is not properly updated. Look here for
some guidance:
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/text.html#error_framework

And try to rerun the latest office update.

Bob:

I ran the update again and after that also installed the latest one (11.3.5
and 11.3.6, respectively). Things seem to be working well now but I have
only tried opening a few documents.

Thank you for your help and suggestion.

I am having the same problem as described above, twice now. I am not
a highly tech-savvy person, but very frustrated as I have lost 3 days
work so far because I cannot access my Excel workbook. I have tried
to implement the suggestions here as best I could, but to no
resolution.
I removed Office 2004 and re-installed it.
I tried to unlock identity folder as suggested--there is no identity
folder for Excel--or any other office program except Entourage, and
that one is not accessible.
I dragged the microsoft Preferences folder to the desktop per some
micorsoft advice--that did not work.
I tried to find an appropriate update but the update said that I
already had it on my computer. I could be missing something here.
The solution offered by one user---re-writing something...--it's
beyond my abilities.
Can someone help me solve this--or suggest another spreadsheet
software I might consider.

Hi Audrey,

I can hear the frustration in your voice. Take a deep breath and we'll do
our best to help you.

It sounds to me that your base system has problems. Office is installed on
that system and if things are out of whack, Office cannot install. It's not
Office that's the problem so changing to a different application will not
solve your problem.

Step 1. Let's verify that it's your OS and not your User's folder that's the
problem. In System Preferences, create a new User. Switch to the new User
and try to launch Excel. Does it work there? If yes, then the problem is in
your User's folder. If no, then it is the OS.

Step 2. Repair the OS.

1) First try applying the latest Apple Combo updater. See links below.

Reboot/login using Safe Mode
Run Repair Permissions
Install the OS Combo Updater
Reboot

2) Do an "Archive & Install" of the OS. Update with the combo. Just be sure
to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select Archive &
Install How to: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120>

3) Install Office from CD and UPDATE.

4) Restart
5) Repair Permissions

Please let us know if this helps.

Links for the Apple Combo updater:

Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Just to be clear. IF the combo doesn't work THEN do an "Archive & Install".

Diane, you might like to reconsider your advice after reading Apple
Knowledge Base article 306043.

I'll accept that for some people, an archive and install is less
terrifying than typing a command at the terminal ;-)
But once you overcome that fear, forcing update_prebinding at the
terminal is far less time consuming, and potentially less disruptive of
one's system.

Thank you for a prompt reply, Diane,

I don't think it is my computer's OS. Yesterday a friend dropped by
with his Mac laptop and I gave him a copy of the file on my flash
stick. THe identical problem occuredd on his computer when trying to
open it in Filemaker. He took it home and finally opened it in an old
version of Excel on an older Mac he has, then saved it in Excel 2004
and e-mailed it to me this morning. I was ableto open it and wrok with
it. However, I don't trust the stability--Excel still sometimes
"quits unexpectedly" (as did the Filemaker program). My thought now
is that it is somehow due to having created the file on Excel Windows
and then transferring it to the Office for Mac. It is a file I have
saved many iterations of and worked with for a few years now. My
guess is that the file is somehow corrupt, and I should recreate it in
the current Excel for Mac I have. However, I dread recreating all the
worksheets with their formatting and formulas. ANd I'd like to
understand why it happened so as to avoid the problem in teh future.

If you have any advice, I'm open...

Eliminating possible sources of the problem is the first step in finding a
solution.

I suspect you might be correct. Excel is not my area of expertise, so I'm
going to refer you to the microsoft.public.mac.office.excel newsgroup. This
is probably your best source to find knowledgeable help. Some of the excel
MVPs might be monitoring this list, but you'll get a wider audience of
knowledgeable folks on the excel list.

Please post back here when you find a solution though so the readers that
are following your thread will know the result.

I just saw on MacFixIt some additional notes for those that are having
problems with the update_prebinding failing.

When Office apps won't launch: a fix for update_prebinding

Makes me glad I don't have an Intel Mac right now. :)

It *is* a bit scary isn't it?. It only applies to a few users. My Mac
Pro has been fine so far. It took the software update automatic route
for all of 10.4.10 Quicktime 7.2 and Office 10.3.6 without
misperforming. I guess my time will come.

I have seen the article you quoted already. It seems to be needed for
those for whom neither the combo update alone nor combo followed by
Apple's update prebinding magic worked.

There is more to this story I'm sure. What's the betting on a
10.4.10-and-a-bit software update coming soon?

Hello Audrey,

1. Quit all Office applications
2. Go into the hard drive/applications/Microsoft Auto Update/and click
on check for updates
3. You will see 11.3.5 update just click on install
4. After it finishes installing you should be able to launch your
Office applications without the Framework Library error
5. If not able to update to 11.3.5 through the auto update go to
www.mactopia.com and click on downloads and then 2004 and here you
will see the 11.3.5 update - download it and then install

6. If the steps above does not work - boot into a safe boot and try it
then - if you have a issue booting into a safe boot by holding down
your shift key and turning on your computer then you are having
Operating System issues and you need to contact Apple Support
