Error message when opening ANY existing Word file

I receive an error message that the file is already in use and would I like
to make a copy every time I open ANY existing Word document. The only time I
do not get the error message is when I open a NEW document. Does anyone know
how to fix this? I thought maybe all the files were corrupt but even when I
start a new document and save it, the next time I try to open it, I get the
same error message.

Does the error message say that the file is in use or that it is not
available? If the former, see
