Error message when opening word 2003 in Asian (?) characters

Hi,

Every time I open a word document (2003) I receive an error message which I
am forced to click ok to. Then immediately there is another, similar looking
message. I click ok to that and away I go. Word functions normally. This
happens every time without fail, very annoying. I cannot read the error as it
appears to use Asian characters, but I'm not sure. Occasionally, at the end
of the string of characters in the message I get
appdata/roaming/microsoft/office.

Any help here much appreciated

Thanks Terry,

I tried running Word with cmd but that did not fix the problem. I renamed
normal.dot anyway to test that but no joy there. I have refernce manager
files in Word startup folder. I moved them out and tried again to start Word
but I get the same error messages. I deleted the appropriate registry entries
as suggested in the FAQ, rebooted and ran Word but the messages remain. I
even reinstalled Word but so far same messages. Not sure if there is anything
else I can try? Thanks for your help anyway,

Matt

What happens when you start Word in Safe Mode. From Start, Run (Winkey+R)
and type in

winword /a

and press enter. Do you still get the same message?

Go to Office Tools and choose Office Language settings and deselect Asian
Language support (in fact, to eliminate and problems, make sure that only
YOUR language is selected and set as default).

Test again.

Thanks Terry, I didn't know that existed. I went to Office Tools and Language
settings but only Englsh is enabled and English is my default. I restarted
Word and got the same message. This one was the one with
users/appdata/roaming/office in english at the end of the Asian characters.

Thanks for trying,

Matt

....roaming\microsoft\templates is where you will find the global template
for Word. But I am baffled that it could have anything to do with templates
or anything else in Roaming because when you start with the /a switch, Word
is started in its default install condition bypassing absolutely everything
else such as macros, templates, customizations, etc. This is very confusing.

Hi,

yes, I only get the roaming bit if I start Word normally, if I start Word
with the /a switch I get just the 'standard' Asian character 2 messages that
I've been getting. Either way, they won't go away. Yes I'm stumped too, have
seen this only once on the internet, on experts exchange where a user
without admin rights had what looked like the exact same situation that I am
having. But I have admin rights on my standalone home pc so I don't get it.
If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful,

Matt
