Error message when opening Word

V

Vivian

When opening Word 2003, I get the following error message:

"Microsoft Office Word can't check the spelling or grammar in this document.
Microsoft Office Word cannot install the necessary files due to Winodws
Installer error 1605
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

The temporary fix I have for this is to tick off the "Check spelling as you
type" option, but that's not good enough (I'm deploying the application to
lots of users). I've applied the fix that Microsoft has for Installer error
1605, but no luck, I still get the error.

Has anybody else experienced this? Any fixes - permanent if preferably?

Many thanks.

The "usual cure" (assuming there is a usual cure) is uninstalling and then
reinstalling the Proofing tools (Start - Settings/Control Panel - Add or
Remove Programs, Microsoft Office, etc.).

Possibly something has gone awry with the Windows installer. It is
difficult to know exactly what. Possibly a recent upgrade or fix that was
installing automatically terminated fatally.

In any case, please have a look here and see if there is anything that
applies to your situation:

Thanks for all the suggestions, but unfortunatelly, none worked!

However, I need a little favour from you: if you have Office 2003 in your
PC's, can you pls check if you have the following registry keys:

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling
and
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling

Thanks.

Hmmm... the plot thickens.

I have HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools

but not \Spelling. Under Proofing Tools, I have:

Custom Dictionaries
Grammar
MSGrammar
3.0
[six more keys, one for each of six languages, each with Option
Set 0 and Option Set 1 subkeys]
3.1
1036
Option Set 0
Option Set 1
TSCS Translator

I do not have:

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling

In fact, it goes out to:

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft

But, there is no Shared Tools under it (just Conferencing, IE, Messenger,
System Certificates, Windows and Window NT).

I hope this helps...

Are you in an Office with a systems administrator? Any reason why she or he
wouldn't want folks using the proofing tools? If you're in an Office at
someone else's mercy, I'd talk to the sysadmin. If you ARE the sysadmin...
whoops.

If you're a standalone user, my next suggestion would be:

http://www.officearticles.com/word/steps_to_troubleshooting_microsoft_word.htm

And, if that doesn't work, I guess I'd try removing Office completely,
cleaning the registry as discussed here:

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301&spid=2488&sid=251

and then reinstalling.

Fun, eh?

Yes, I am Sys Admin!!! We are testing Office 2003 with some NTSA, but not
everybody get this error message, which makes it more difficult to get to the
bottom of it.

Will keep investigating. Thanks for your help.

I thought I'd let you all know that one of my colleagues managed to fix this
problem. If any of you comes across this issue, this is what to do:

Delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Components\D4BE92CC2CB71D119A12000A9CE1A22A

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Components\F3BE92CC2CB71D119A12000A9CE1A22A

Re-boot the computer and then, first thing after logging on, open Word.

Thanks to all for your input.
