Error Message when using Linked Table Manager on XP

I manage a database that my colleagues and I use. It runs in Access 97 which
we have installed on each of our Win XP workstations. It has a 'Local' front
end and a collection of tables stored on the network. I perform development
mods on a 'local' version on my Laptop which also has a 'local' set of
background data. I use the Tools, Add-ins, Linked Table Manager to relink
when ever I move the revised DB from local to production and vice versa.
Since my Desktop has been migrated to Win XP SP2 I have been receiving a
message like the following whenever I go to select a new source for the
background tables:
"You do not have access to the folder 'C:\Office\Access\*.mdb'. See your
administrator for access to this folder."
I have been unable, so far, to find a work around - except to go to my old
desktop which still runs Win 98 SE and performs the operation flawlessly.
Now I find that I am receiving the same message on my Laptop which has never
been attached to our network and hence has not been exposed to the myriad of
Group Policies in operation on the network. However, despite the irritation
of the message and the need to relink most of the tables one by one instead
of in a batch, my laptop will let me relink to the local database.

Has anyone 'out there' seen this message and, more importantly, have any
definitive answers to solve the problem.
