While exporting outlook personal folders to my docs, in preparation to copy
to a usb drive, I get a message saying "error copying file or folder... the
process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion
of the file".

I am using outlook 2003 and want to export all personal folders into a pst
file, then store it in My Docs folder, so I can then copy it onto a usb drive
for backup purposes.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks...nina

It is not recommended to export/import from/to PST files. Rather create
a new PST file, then copy (drag-and-drop) the items you want to the
target folder.

How do I do that?

Once I drag and drop into the new pst file, can I verify that what I put
into it is there? Thanks for your responsiveness...nina

Don't even bother to make a new pst file. With Outlook closed, just copy
your existing pst file....or even better, just move the existing pst file to
your My Docs folder. Next time Outlook opens, it will complain that it can't
find the pst file. Navigate to where you moved it to....then you won't have
to do any import/export or copying at all...

If you want to copy everything, then Gordon's advice below is better. If
you want to copy only certain items or folders, then the drag-and-drop
method is best.

Once you have created the new PST file with Outlook, you will see it as
a new Personal Folders file. You then select the items you want to copy
in the original Personal Folder file (still in outlook), and
drag-and-drop it to the new file. You will immediately see there what
you have copied. (You can also use right-click drag-and-drop to select
between Copy and Move.)
