Hi John,
More than likely you have a global template/add-in that modifies your
Normal.dot each time Word starts. If the changes are saved each time
then it can lead to the corruption of your Normal.dot and you'll be
back here asking why Word won't start. <grin>
If Word came installed as part of Works Suite then more than likely
the culprit is the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word" Take a look
in your Control Panel and if you find the add-in uninstall it as it is
known to cause several problems. Note you are not uninstalling Word or
Works, just an add-in that provides additional functionality to Word.
If it isn't the Works Suite add-in go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins
and see if there are any global templates or add-ins listed. If so
they are located in one of your Startup folders. The location of the
Word\Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations
and the Office\Startup folder can be found in the Office installation
path..
Move each file you find out of the folder and start/exit Word until
you find the offending add-in.
Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
