"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to
close" Error Message.

I tried the recommended fix (using Windows XP & Microsoft
Works Suite 2001 with MS Word 2000). I followed the
advise in your Method 1. To remove the Compatibility Mode
Setting in Windows XP, but the check marks were not
there. Also tried Method 2: create a new normal.dot
File. Search did not locate any normal.dot file. I know
there is one, because each time I exit from Word I get a
pop up question if I want to save the Normal File.

Do you have any other recommendations that I can use?

In some versions of Word/Windows Normal.dot is a Hidden file. In Windows
Explorer set the Folder Options (Tools menu) to show hidden files and
folders, and then you should be able to find Normal.dot.
