Error Message!

Hi,

I am getting the following message when trying to add a record in a subform:

"A problem occured while Microsoft Access was communicating with the OLE
server or ActiveX Control.

Close the OLE server and restart it outside of Microsoft Access. Then try
the original operation again in Microsoft Access"

Needless to say, I can't add any records, nor do I know what hte message
means. I'm quite prepared to admit that I have made an error somewhere in
relationships etc... but this is not an error msg I have seen before, so I
wanted to check with the forum before proceeding.

Any help greatly appreciated!

is there an exterior image/icon/document that the form is OLE linked into?

if so; double check that whatever that is - that it hasn't moved and
rendered the ole incapable of doing its job

you might also try opening the subform itself directly - not as part of the
mainform...and checking its behavior....it seems plausible that this error
could be coming from the mainform and not the subform.. one would at least
clarify this point...

There are no external elements it is linking to, no activeX controls either

And i had a look at the form and subform independantly of one another, but
they both seem to be working fine on their own. The error only occurs when I
try to add a record into the subform (whilst it is open as a subform).


Is it likely to be something basic like relationships etc or should i be
looking elsewhere?

well if the subform works fine when on its own - then that's a good sign....

you could of course always skirt the issue by considering a different design
where you put a button on the mainform to open the details form (rather than
place in as a sub form)

this of course does not fix the problem but avoids it.....but sometimes one
needs a quick fix...

If your mainform property does not allow edits or additions - this could be
an issue too....I would double check this...

I don't know your design - if your mainform is opening based on a query or
table for which the subform is also based - then you may not be able to
change the subform info - but all of this is just general off the cuff...

finally - take the error message as exactly stated and put it into google
with " " around it and this will find discussion forums where others are
reviewing the exact same error message - and this can be pretty helpful.....

The old Google route!

I seem to have solved the problem somehow through a combination of deleting
all the relationships in and around the relevant tables and re-making them
again, and by deleting and re-making the sub form again. Perhaps a little
barbaric, but it seems to have worked. Still no idea what the problem was
though!
