Error Message

I have a very long formula in a cell that was working perfectly until I saved
and closed the file. When I re-opened it, and click on the cell with the
formula, I get the following message:

The text string you entered is too long. Reduce the number of characters or
cancel the entry.

The cell contains formula, not text, so why am I getting this error? I
cannot put the formula here, because excel won't let me see all of it, only
about 20 characters, then it ends. The odd thing is that formula still
works, but I am not able to edit it, because of this error.

Just in case someone else runs across this problem. I found that if I opened
the linked files that were referred to in my formula, the error goes away.
But if they are closed it gives me the error.
